What is BWRT?

BWRT®’ stands for ‘BrainWorking Recursive Therapy®’, a modern model of psychology and psychotherapy created by UK professional therapist, Terence Watts, MCGI. It uses a totally logical, practical and down-to-earth working method in which it’s not necessary for you to talk about anything you would rather not discuss – the practitioner only needs to know how you feel and how you would prefer to feel instead. BWRT® is unlike any other therapy you might have heard of or read about, using the latest discoveries in neuroscience coupled with your own unique brain processes to help you get better. How different is BWRT from CBT, EMDR and hypnotherapy?

CBT – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This works by getting you to rationalise and reorganise your conscious thoughts and usually journal them daily. Those thoughts arrive in consciousness after a journey through hundreds of thousands of neural connections – by some estimates, a journey of fifty metres – in the unconscious parts of the brain, getting involved with many unconnected processes. It’s based on research from 90+ years ago. Can be effective but often not long-lasting.
EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. This one works at desensitising your reactions to trauma by holding them in your mind while accessing the different parts of the brain where elements of the traumatic memory are triggered. It works well but is often extremely uncomfortable while the trauma is being held in more vivid focus than usual. It’s based on research from around 40 years ago.
Hypnotherapy. There are many forms of hypnotherapy, including investigative, analytical, suggestion based and solution-focused. It can be effective if the best method for the presenting problem is used and is not usually uncomfortable during the sessions. It works most of the time by seeking to make changes to the conscious processes which are the result of a fifty-metre journey in the brain before reaching conscious thought. Modern hypnotherapy originates mainly from the 19th Century.


All the above rely on working with ‘the subconscious’, which is a concept used to describe unexplained behaviour.


BWRT – BrainWorking Recursive Therapy. This works in an entirely different way from any of the above by directly accessing the early part of the brain, the brainstem and the cerebellum. This is known collectively as the ‘Reptilian Complex’ or ‘Lizard Brain’ and it is almost certainly where the ‘subconscious’ resides. So, it works to stop the problem before it even gets to those fifty metres of neurons, before it gets to the conscious mind, and does it quickly and easily – you don’t have to think of the problem for more than a few seconds. It originates from 2011, based on the latest neurological research.

I came across BWRT during a moment of crisis in my personal life. I had experienced various other forms of therapy over the years and more recently while handling the fallout of a broken marriage.

While I had learned a great deal from the more traditional talking therapies, I came to a point where I could no longer find the words that helped me move forward in my life. I was tired of retelling my story and exhausted from the re-lived emotions and trauma of it all.


When I was introduced to BWRT the first bonus was not having to retell my story, all that was expected of me was that: I wanted to heal. That I wanted to move on. That I wanted my life to be better than it was currently.

The outcome for me from my few BWRT sessions was that:
It was life-changing.
It was immediate.
It was content-free.


Today as a qualified BWRT therapist, I am both honoured and privileged to enable you to create a change in your life.
For further clarification, I have studied counseling, and nutrition, run a successful Bowen Therapy clinic, volunteered for Drug Arm Australia, Foodbank, Wesley Mission helping the Aged, and 3rd Space – a daytime drop-in centre in Brisbane.
